In honor of the arrival of October, I thought it’d be fun to talk about Halloween books today! I love, love, love reading and want to pass that on to my kids. Because of that, we tend to buy a lot of books for our kids…and even more so for holidays!

  1. Boo!

We found this cute little book a couple years ago and it ended up being read almost every single night last October. It’s a simple read, so Harlyn was able to memorize it and “read” it to us.

  1. A Halloween Scare in the Carolinas

I’m pretty sure these adorable books come in all states and all major holidays, but we just love these! Honestly, at first I was a little nervous that our sweet girl would be afraid, but she wasn’t. We do make sure to remind her that monsters (and all the other Halloween stuff) is just pretend. I love that this book mentions our city and areas right around us…it makes it that much more fun!

  1. Spooky Wheels on the Bus

Get this one! We love to sing this all together. Who doesn’t want to sing about ‘mummies’ on the bus???

  1. Pete the Cat Trick or Pete

If your kids are into Pete the Cat, you need to add this to your collection. And if they aren’t, well, why  not? Pete is just a great series. This cat has a great outlook on life, and the books are happy and colorful. Pete and his friend go trick or treating in this Halloween tale (tail!?!?!) 😉

  1. 10 Trick or Treaters

I think we picked up this book last year, and it quickly became a fave. It’s a counting down book, Halloween-style! The kids all stop trick or treating one by one as they get spooked.

  1. Goodnight Goon

Obviously a spoof of Goodnight Moon, this one is a keeper. Every kid needs this silly book!!

  1. Room on the Broom

A cute book where a witch quickly runs out of room on her broom! And last year they had this on Netflix too, so be sure to check it out there too!

  1. Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin

Another one we have fun singing. We bought this one for Maverick last year, but Harlyn enjoys it too. We love quick, easy board books.

  1. Llama Llama Trick or Treat

Llama Llama books are always welcome in our home. We have lots of these, so we had to get the Halloween one too. Llama is just the sweetest little thing!

  1. It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse

Mouse is ready to draw faces on his pumpkins in this Halloween book. We love to go back through after we’re done reading and pick out our favorite pumpkins!

There you have it. Ten of our faves (although I almost couldn’t decide and the list was dangerously close to going from 10 to 15!). We love our Halloween books, and even as Harlyn gets older, she doesn’t seem to grow out of the younger ones. That’s the thing about holiday stuff: there’s really no age. I hope both our kids are still into all of these for years to come just because Halloween books are festive and cute!

What Halloween books will you be reading to your kids this October? Are there any I should be adding to our collection STAT?

We have Goodnight Goon and it’s inspired my four year old to make up her own “spooky stories”. A fun spin off of the classic book!
