No Social Sundays

For the month of January, Brandon and I tried out a new thing: No Social Sundays.

Honestly, we thought this would be a really hard challenge for both of us, considering how much time we spend on social media. But it was not only surprisingly easy, but also incredibly FREEING.

I tend to get caught in the scroll of Instagram and Facebook, even though I know nothing new or important has happened. All of a sudden, I’ve wasted time I could have been using for, well, anything else. So when Brandon came to me with the idea to give up social media one day a week as the first monthly challenge for 2021, I was in.

Here’s what happened!

1.I focused more on my kids.

Without social media, I wasn’t distracted by stupid stuff. Rather, I truly heard every word they said and spent more time playing with them. They LIVE for me to play with them, so I don’t get out of it often, but even still, I ended up feeling like I had more time to devote to them on my social media-less Sundays.

2. I had more time to read.

If I had a few minutes here and there, I picked up a book because social media was not an option. Since I love to read, it’s weird I don’t naturally do this…I guess it just goes to show you how easy and quick grabbing your phone is!!

3. I had a better connection with Brandon.

Without either one of us on social, we didn’t really have a reason to have our phones in our hands, except for an occasional text. We found out that we were able to focus better on what we were saying throughout the day, and on Sunday evenings we didn’t sit around “together” really just being on our phones. It made us both realize that there’s more time to be together, if we’re willing to intentionally FIND it.

4. I was more relaxed.

When you can’t use social media for a whole day, there’s no news or comparison to keep up with. I was in my own happy family bubble, and I’m HERE FOR IT. Without access to social, my stress level went down and I just seemed to have a better Sunday!

Honestly, I think I could make this a regular thing and not use Facebook or Instagram every Sunday. I know the platforms are made to keep me on them, and it works. By taking a break from them weekly, I gained so much! Maybe No Social Sundays are my new normal??

Hey, if you like the idea of a monthly challenge, here’s our 2021 monthly challenge list! February’s challenge is writing 20 minutes every single day, which I know is going to be a beast but also totally worth it! It doesn’t matter what you write–affirmations, a book, a journal entry. Writing is good for the soul. 😉

Have you ever intentionally stayed off social media for a set amount of time? As part of our 2021 monthly challenges, my husband and I named January the month of No Social Sundays. Here’s how it turned out! #unplugged #nosocialsundays
