You read that right–my HUSBAND proposed to me a week ago!
Let me back up. Brandon originally proposed to me in July 2006. We were in college, and had been dating for three years. He asked both my parents’ permission before he asked me. Of course, I said yes.
We got married the week after Brandon graduated college–December 19, 2008. And we lived happily ever after, obvs.
Except here’s the thing. Who you agree to marry at 22 is not the same person at 34. We’ve both changed a lot (THANKFULLY!!). And by the grace of God, we’ve grown and changed TOGETHER.
So last week, we went to Charleston, SC for the Rise Business conference (which I blogged about HERE).And whenever we’re close to a beach, we go to the beach!! Even in November. I didn’t think anything was weird at all!!
As we were walking down the beach (AT SUNSET YOU GUYS! SUNSET!), Brandon starts saying how much loves me, reflecting on our past, present, and future, and I’m still not quite understanding that anything is going on.
Then he gets down on one knee, and whips about a box. In the box is a GORGEOUS, AMAZING RING. And he asks me to marry him (again). Of course, I”m bawling like an absolute lunatic at this point (thank goodness the beach was basically empty!), like freaking out and saying “what? WHAT???” over and over. He then tells me we’re going to renew our vows on the beach next summer!!
So…I’ve got a beautiful new ring and a beach vow renewal to plan!!
About the ring: I never have asked for a new ring. I love my original engagement/wedding ring set. But what Brandon could afford as a college student was not a whole lot!! So we have occasionally talked about maybe one day in the future getting a bigger ring, but it was just a “one day” thing and I certainly wasn’t requesting it. It was definitely a shock!! We weren’t really sure what to do with the old rings, but then we realized it’s our call to make, so for now I’m just wearing the new one in place of the old.
While the ring is truly an amazing gift from my husband, the better gift is that, despite my shortcomings, despite the hardships of marriage, despite being young when we got married…he chose me. He chooses me every single day, and now we get to celebrate that 11 years into our marriage. And I choose him right back.
