Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe + Baking With Kids

I wanted to share my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe today since, if your weather’s like ours, it’s been pretty cold and rainy lately. I’m not one for cooking, but I do like to bake…even though I rarely do it!

A few weeks ago, I went up to Michigan (if you missed that post it’s HERE), and my mom, sister and I did some baking. And since I enjoyed it so much, I decided to bake cookies with the kids a week or so ago! Plus, I totally owed them for making cookies and fudge when I was all the way in Michigan!! Although I DID bring them back some goodies, so I tried to redeem myself! ☺

I always use the Crisco Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe (HERE)  which is basically fool proof. My mom, sister and I started using this when my sister and I were kids, and I don’t believe we’ve used any other recipe since. It’s the cookies I used to give out for Christmas presents to all B’s family when we were dating, and the cookies we made for all our family parties. It’s heavy on the brown sugar, which I looooove.

I only make one change to the recipe, and that’s that I reduce the salt from 1 tsp to about ¾ tsp. Other than that, I follow directly, and then bake for 7 minutes instead of 8 because my oven is either hotter or faster. 😉 As far as the chocolate chips themselves go, I always pick Nestle, and while we did the chocolate chunks for the past hundred years, in Michigan we used mini chocolate chips which were great, and at home the regular ones. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong no matter which shape/size of the Nestle semi-sweet chocolate you pick!

Anyway. I made the cookies with the kids. And if you’ve been around This Average Mom Blog for any amount of time, you know that’s almost unheard of. I’m not the Pinterest Mom. I don’t cook. But baking? I can get down with that every once in a while!! Harlyn and Maverick had a lot of fun making the cookies! I think Maverick actually just stuck around for the chocolate chips themselves, but Harlyn helped. She loves helping to measure, getting to pour by herself, and stirring. She’s not a fan of the mixer, so I take that over. But she was more than willing to get the cookies onto the cookie sheet, AND to taste test. However, she didn’t offer to help clean up… 😉

After spending time in the kitchen with Harlyn and Mav, I realized it was pretty fun and an easy and yummy way to get in some weekend QT with them. I spend a decent amount of time playing hide n seek, tag, and Barbies, which I do because it makes them happy! But baking cookies is much more my thing, and I know we’ll do it again in the near future. Probably not in the next few weekends though, because we just bought way too many Girl Scout cookies!!! Oops!

We will probably do the Irresistible Peanut Butter Cookies (HERE)  next time around, because those are also amazing.

Do you ever bake with your kids? What are your favorite dessert recipes??

Need a great chocolate chip cookie recipe? I’ve got you covered with my favorite Crisco recipe! Super easy, really tasty, and your kids will love to help you bake them. Plus, I’ve recently discovered that baking is a great way to spend quality time with your kids so that you don’t have to play dolls or trucks! And of course, your kids will love to taste those cookies fresh out of the oven.
